Episode 1 Begins: Building from Scratch
My name is Nelson I. Nworie, and I am a self-made hustler from Nigeria. I came from nothing and started building from scratch. I had no rich parental support, no connections to wealthy families, no assistance from anyone, and no college degree from Harvard. But I made it through pure perseverance, a solid work ethic, and an unbreakable drive to succeed.
I grew up in a small village in the southeastern part of Nigeria, where my parents were subsistence farmers. They worked so hard to send me and my siblings to school, even though they didn’t have much money. And so, I had to work hard from a young age as well to help support my family. I learned the value of hard work and perseverance, and I used these skills to build a successful career.
I had big dreams of becoming a tech entrepreneur and helping people in need. I wanted to use my skills to make a significant change in my community. But my path to success was not easy.
I faced many challenges along the way. I didn’t have the grades to get into tech school, or the money to pay for it either.
After graduating from the University, I went for a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The NYSC is a program in Nigeria where young people are required to serve their country for one year.
When I came back from the National Youth Service Corps in 2014, I was determined to make something for myself. I saved up a small amount of money from the service year and started a small grocery shop. But the business didn’t last long. I didn’t have enough experience or knowledge to run it successfully.
After that, I tried my hand at the fashion business. But that didn’t work out either. I couldn’t make enough money to make ends meet. So, I later left my shop in the hands of my younger sister Ijeoma.
In 2019, I decided to move to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
I got my first job as a fleet cleaner in a Chinese company. It was a tough job, but I was determined to make it work.
